Lydia Eden Batts.

From a young age, my mind was always full overflowing with ideas of what I could make. I was forever rearranging, reimagining, and daydreaming about beauty, first in my bedroom as a young girl, and now in my own home.

That instinct found its place in my work. For over a decade, I’ve shared my watercolour paintings online, each piece an extension of that same desire to create something thoughtful and considered.

Then, unexpectedly, everything shifted.

The tiles began as something personal, but quickly took on a life of their own. Through social media, people connected with the care, the process, and the quiet obsession behind each one. What they saw was what I had always felt: a deep pull toward making things by hand, as authentically as possible.

In many ways, the tiles feel like a natural evolution. Years of painting, paired with a growing desire to create objects that live within a space, not just hang on a wall. Pieces that are touched, used, and lived with.

Now, I take on only a small number of projects each month, allowing the time and attention each one deserves. It fills me in a way that’s hard to put into words, creating pieces that will last, tell a story, and carry the unmistakable imprint of the hands that made them.

My journey was anything but ordinary. What began as a search for the perfect tile became a quiet obsession—each piece shaped slowly by hand, carrying a sense of time, touch, and story.

My Design

The collection is inspired by traditional Delft tiles, where individual motifs are repeated to form a larger story across the surface.

Each design is painted freehand and arranged among plain tiles to create rhythm and balance. When installed together, the tiles form a composition that feels both timeless and playful.

Every tile is a small work of art, intended to bring character into everyday spaces.

My Installation Guidance

Handmade tiles differ from machine-made tiles and require thoughtful installation.

Due to natural variation in size and form, grout spacing should be slightly more flexible to allow the tiles to sit comfortably together. An experienced tiler familiar with handmade ceramics will achieve the best result.

It is recommended that additional tiles are ordered to allow for cutting and installation adjustments.

When installed with care, handmade tiles create a surface full of depth, texture, and individuality.

My Process

Each tile begins as a piece of hand-rolled clay, carefully shaped and left to dry slowly before its first firing. Once fired, every piece is individually hand-painted with my designs.

The tiles are then glazed and fired again, allowing the clay and glaze to develop their final character in the kiln. Because clay responds naturally to heat, subtle variations in tone, texture, and form emerge during this process — a quality that makes each tile unique.

This slow and thoughtful method means no two tiles are ever exactly the same.
